《Water-1》, 2012, Oil on canvas, 180 x 280 cm
meng huang
The artist and activist Meng Huang is best known for hist large scale land-and waterscapes. To avoid painting turning into a safe, repetitive activity, Meng Huang paints outdoors on three to four-meter-high canvases attached to scaffolding. His subjects range from Chinese landscapes to the waters of the river Inn. In his artistic work, but also beyond, Meng Huang has always been dedicated to research and education. His quest for freedom and his deep concern about injustice shine through in his paintings and reveal themselves intuitively to the viewer. Through his unique formal vocabulary unites the art histories and cultures of both Europe and China in an effortless and unexpected amalgamation of traditions. The monumental canvases he works with being both reminiscent of Western art history as well as the philosophy of the Song Dynasty. Adopting formal strategies that are intuitively legible in both nations, the artist employs his combined cultural knowledge into a new artistic tradition that can be understood universally.
